BMA awards contract for Hay Point Coal Terminal upgrade

BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has signed an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract for the company’s Shiploader 2 and Berth 2 Replacement (SABR) project at the Hay Point Coal terminal near Mackay, Queensland.

BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has signed an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract for the company’s Shiploader 2 and Berth 2 Replacement (SABR) project at the Hay Point Coal Terminal near Mackay, Queensland.

McConnell Dowell was selected for the role, and will completely replace one of the three berths and shiploaders at the Hay Point Coal Terminal, which have reached the end of their life.

The SABR project aims to replace both facilities and improve operability through a berth extension and storm immunity by raising the berth.

McConnell Dowell will work with design engineer Aurecon and BMA in an integrated project delivery environment to optimise the facility design and construction methodology.

The scope of works will include provisions of constructability input, advice and prepatory work for construction including assisting with facility design, construction execution planning and estimating and planning assistance.

The works are expected to be completed in 2023.
