“The units require a good service factor, about 1.8-2.0 on motor power. Because of the dusty environments in which these are typically used, the gearboxes are always supplied with taconite seals and desiccant breathers,” Bonfiglioli national product manager – Heavy Duty Products Kris Jaryn said.
For Australian underground coal mines, drive assemblies must avoid exposed aluminium parts, motors must meet mine specifications, and site-specific requirement, such as special oil sight glass, stainless steel drain valves, breathers, bearings and oil temperature monitoring are common.
Rising operational costs, stricter safety legislation, labour shortages, environmental targets and the need for greater capacity are driving the adoption of remote monitoring.
“Remote monitoring of underground conveyor drive systems is gaining more traction. Factors like bearing vibration, oil temperature, overload events, etc can be monitored and recorded without the need for someone to take these measurements in person,” Jaryn said.
“This helps to prevent equipment damage and faults, contributing to a safer working environment for personnel. In addition, remote monitoring data contains valuable information that can be used to identify and remedy inefficiencies early on and assists in maintenance planning and providing operational insight.”
