Controlled and compact: level switch tech for bulk liquid measurement

While the task of tracking liquid levels used to fall on manual labour, advancements in reliable switch technologies have helped to automate the process, offering increased safety and more accurate measurements, especially in compact or unconventionally shaped tanks. As pioneers of intuitive and versatile measurement technology, VEGA has developed a universal vibrating level switch, designed for use in all types of bulk liquids.

The VEGASWING Series can reliably detect, with millimetre accuracy, the continuous levels of liquid being held within a vessel. It uses a tuning fork, which is energised by a vibration drive, to assess the entire volume and can be positioned anywhere within the medium. Impervious to interference caused by pressure, temperature, foam, or viscosity, it can also convert frequency changes into a switching command.

For example, if the tank becomes full, or empty, or reaches a programmed limit level, it can notify the system of overfill or dry run to avoid pump damage and efficiently monitor inventory levels. John Leadbetter, Managing Director of VEGA Australia, says that the VEGASWING will be one of the key units on display at the BULK2022 expo in Melbourne this month.

“Each of the modules that will be on display are the latest version of their instrument technology,” he says. “We are aiming to showcase how far instrumentation has come in recent years, and how easy these products are to implement for a broad range of industries.”

With housings available in plastic, stainless steel, or aluminium, the compact instrument is only 38mm in length, featuring integrated electronics to adjust mode and sensitivity. According to Leadbetter, the VEGASWING series design harnesses well-researched measuring principles with future-proofing digitalisation for a more streamlined bulk handling process.

“Realistically, the market is rapidly changing and so our challenge is to cover all the bases of measurement applications while keeping the equipment simple to use,” he explains.

Visitors to BULK 2022 will be able to see this electronic infrastructure in action, and to connect with product experts on its potential for different types of medium. VEGA’s approach to problem-solving is collaborative, says Leadbetter, built on research and development that aims so solve day-to-day pain points for bulk handling operators.

“Aside from our stall at the expo, we have dedicated training courses and demonstrations at our purpose-built facility in Caringbah,” he says. “It’s an opportunity for people to come and ask questions on installation, maintenance, and compatibility with certain materials or applications. For us, customers aren’t just an order number. We’re there for the journey.”
