Bulk Handling Technologies (BHT) has designed and delivered two steep angle sidewall conveyors for a grinding media loading application at an Indonesian gold mine.
It follows the company’s success at delivering and commissioning a high-incline conveyor for an Australian iron ore mine.
For grinding ball mills to operate consistently and efficiently it is necessary to optimise the ball charge and maintain this optimum charge on a continuous basis. Balls of various sizes can be delivered via automated ball chargers and then they must be conveyed and elevated to the mill feed inlet.
As grinding mills get larger and capacities increase, the need for a reliable, continuous ball charging system is paramount to optimise grinding.
The elevating steep angle conveyor is just one component of the complete automatic ball charging system available from BHT, with solutions for media sizes ranging from 25mm diameter to 250mm.

The project manager for the delivery of the project, Conrado Bezerra said it is a great example of Australian engineering being recognised globally.
“For this application, a Steep Angle Sidewall Conveyor was used to receive, elevate and convey the various sized steel balls safely in ‘pockets’. After a short horizontal feed section, this conveyor had a steep incline of 60 degrees and then a top bend back to horizontal,” Bezerra said.
