Kotzur Australia modernises existing silo infrastructure

Kotzur Australia is upgrading silos for performance, efficiency and compliance without starting from scratch.

As commodity markets shift, technology advances, and efficiency expectations rise, grain storage operators must continually assess and adapt their facilities to remain competitive.

Although many facilities have performed reliably for decades, today’s agricultural and bulk handling operations face new realities as the demands of modern farming include faster harvest turnarounds, higher throughput, tighter compliance requirements, and increased pressure to improve labour efficiency.

Kotzur chief technical officer Ben Kotzur said often the existing core structures remain sound, but the operational capabilities no longer match the pace of today’s agricultural supply chain.

“A lot of sites have opportunity within their existing structural layouts, for further throughput and efficiency gains” Kotzur said. “Rather than starting from scratch, we can upgrade the critical components to upgrade them in line with the client’s strategic objectives.”

Kotzur’s modernisation projects often focus on integrating automation systems, upgrading handling equipment, and rethinking site layouts to streamline workflows. These upgrades can significantly improve efficiency without requiring a complete rebuild. Examples include installing higher-capacity bucket elevators and conveyors to accelerate grain movement, reconfiguring grain flow paths to reduce bottlenecks during peak periods and introducing automated controls that minimise manual intervention while improving operational consistency.

“We’ve delivered projects where unloading times have been significantly reduced simply by rethinking the layout and adding targeted equipment,” Kotzur said.

“These changes not only save time but also improve safety and reduce wear on machinery.”

While the immediate focus may be on upgrading current operations, Kotzur stresses the importance of long-term thinking. Even if expansion isn’t on the horizon, planning for it from the outset can save significant time and complexity later.

“A master plan gives you the flexibility to grow without having to undo previous work,” Kotzur said.

“We always consider possible future needs, whether it’s additional silos, further loading infrastructure, or new handling equipment and ensure there’s enough physical footprint, structural capacity, and layout options to make it possible.”

By incorporating master planning into modernisation projects, the company ensures that today’s upgrades won’t limit tomorrow’s opportunities, allowing sites to adapt to changing market conditions and business growth. The process begins with a thorough site assessment to understand the existing infrastructure’s strengths and limitations. From there, Kotzur Australia develops an upgrade plan that integrates seamlessly with the current layout, reducing downtime and minimising disruption.

By avoiding the cost and delays of complete reconstruction, modernisation projects can deliver a faster return on investment and extend the life of existing assets which in turn is helping operators remain competitive in a fast-changing industry.
