The board of directors of the Minerals Council of Australia has recently appointed a new chair to lead the organisation over the next two years.
The board on June 1 announced Toro Energy boss Dr Vanessa Guthrie would replace Andrew Michelmore as chair of the council, which acts as a lobby group for the mining, exploration and minerals processing sector.
Guthrie is the managing director and chief executive of Toro Energy, an ASX-listed uranium developer working on prospective sites in Western Australia.
The outgoing Michelmore said Guthrie had wide experience in the sector, and a deep knowledge of public policy and community engagement.
Guthrie thanked Michelmore for his leadership over “a period of sharply lower commodity prices”.
“Andrew has led the MCA during an extremely volatile and challenging period,” Guthrie said.
“Like the sector it represents, the MCA has refocused its efforts on core priority issues and delivered more with less.
“The reality is that a diversified mining industry is more important to the Australian economy than ever.
“The dividend of the mining investment boom is a much larger mining industry.”
