Optimising agribusinesses’ storage capacity with Australian made site-constructed silos

Ahrens are delivering Australian-made, large site-constructed silos to significantly increase agribusinesses’ storage capacity.

Bucking a national decline in Australian manufacturing, Ahrens has made significant investments in their advanced local silo manufacturing facility to offer a high-quality Australian made product.

Partnering with South Australian agribusiness, CK Tremletts, Ahrens’ vertically-integrated business model meant its was able to significantly increase silo storage capacity while applying cost effective design solutions.

Ahrens delivered three consecutive stages for this grain storage and handling expansion for repeat client, Andrew Tremlett, located at Sheaoak Log in South Australia.

The final facility comprises of 16 2600-tonne, flat bottom silos equipped with aeration, level indicators and 150 tonne per hour unload systems with inbuilt sweep augers and inclined powerheads.

Scope of works included concrete foundations incorporating ‘H’ style flush floor aeration, two 300 tonne per hour bucket elevators with six way distributors and associated chute work, and transfer conveyors and structural support towers with access ladders.

The total storage capacity of the site is now 41,600 tonnes and offers the functionality of multiple segregations and the ability to unload two trucks simultaneously with differing commodities at a rate of 300 tonnes per hour.

The third and final stage of the upgrade saw a further four silos added to the existing bank of silos at the eastern end of the facility.

Ahrens utilised the natural ground level sloping to the client’s advantage, and was able to increase the silo capacity by 200 tonnes per silo while replicating the infrastructure and concept of the previous stages.

The project combined Ahrens’ in-house capabilities including design, complete project management, silo manufacturing, structural steel manufacturing, site erection, and material handling equipment. Ahrens delivered the project on-time and on-budget.

Ahrens’ flat bottom silos are engineered to Australian conditions and standards for rural and commercial applications with a wide range of unload systems and aeration options.

They are then able to be flat packed to be sent to even the most regional and remote sites, to be installed by their experienced site erection teams.

This investment in local manufacturing also means shorter lead times and has greatly enhanced Ahrens’ competitiveness with overseas markets.

The appeal to agribusinesses has been demonstrated with orders up 300 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019.

With their flat bottom range from 800 tonne to 8,500 tonnes, Ahrens continue to refine and improve their design to be competitive on a global scale.
