Australian-based import and export provider Qube has confirmed the completion of its $13 million investment in stage one upgrades at the former Albany Bulk Handling site.

The site is now able to service grain, mineral sands, and critical minerals industries.

Qube Bulk chief operating officer Morné van Wyngaard said Albany is the “major economic hub for the Great Southern region”, and the Port of Albany provides a needed gateway to Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

“Our $13 million investment in the bulk handling facilities at the port will support growth in export markets for these commodities, strengthen competition and create a win-win for regional producers and commodity exporters,” van Wyngaard said.

“Western Australia is a big state, and our investment in Albany creates new opportunities for regional producers, miners and exporters to move product to market more efficiently, access additional export pathways and strengthen the competitiveness of the Great Southern supply chain.”

In a LinkedIn statement, Qube said the investment will create countless opportunities for regional producers, miners, and exporters to move bulk commodities more efficiently.

Western Australia minister for regional development and ports honourable Stephen Dawson MLC said Port of Albany will continue to expand and grow.

“Improving the berths at WA ports means we can continue to grow port capacity to handle trade and that is vitally important,” Dawson said.

Agriculture and food minister Jackie Jarvis MLC said the expansion will enable Albany to continue thriving.

“This investment ensures our regional ports can offer diverse trade capabilities and plan for the long-term security of our agricultural exports, which is integral for our grain industry,” Jarvis said.

Qube confirmed additional second stage works are underway and will support increased capacity and future commodity growth at the port.

“This investment is designed to deliver benefits for every port user and support Albany’s role as a diversified export gateway for Western Australia,” van Wyngaard said.

“We’re looking forward to completing the finishing touches to stage one over the next few weeks and beginning a new chapter for Albany Port and its users as we continue to assess further opportunities to support diversified trade and additional export capacity across Western Australia.”
