The Queensland government is investing in critical port infrastructure in a move to support jobs, strengthen supply chains, and grow Central Queensland’s economy.
Construction is underway on a multi-million-dollar container depot at the Port of Mackay and is being delivered by North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP), which for the first time will enable regular containerised imports and exports directly through Mackay.
Minister for transport and main roads Brent Mickelberg said the project is a “practical investment” that will deliver jobs and long-term economic growth.
“This is the Crisafulli Government backing regional Queensland with real infrastructure that strengthens the economy and supports local jobs,” Mickelberg said.
“This is a funded, construction-ready project that is happening now. It will improve road safety, get trucks off the Bruce highway, and help build a stronger economy in North Queensland.”
Mickelberg said the investment is just one of the ways the Queensland Government is delivering a plan for the state’s future. By enabling goods to move directly through Mackay, exporters and importers expect to no longer route freight through distant ports.
