Rio looking into flash fire on Yandicoogina conveyor

Rio Tinto is said to be investigating how a conveyor caught fire at its Yandicoogina mining operation in WA’s Pilbara region, after footage of the blaze hit social media this week.

A short video was posted on Facebook by a mining jobs page, apparently showing a large conveyor on fire at Yandicoogina “over the weekend”.

According to The West Australian, Rio is investigating what caused the fire.

“Safety is our top priority and Rio Tinto has commenced an internal investigation into the incident and is also working with the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety to understand the cause of the fire,” a Rio spokesperson was quoted as saying.

One firefighter was reportedly treated for minor smoke inhalation, but no other injuries have been reported, and the fire was brought under control quickly, according to reports.
