SEW EURODRIVE tests for grain and bulk handling in Wingfield

SEW EURODRIVE backs rugged industrial gear technology with rapid, local service at its Wingfield facility – giving South Australia’s grain sector a reliable partner during long shifts and tight export windows.

Bulk handling gear works hard: long hours, heavy loads and dust. SEW’s answer is two‑fold – engineer robust gear units and back them with local capacity at Wingfield in Adelaide.

SEW Eurodrive business development manager – Industrial Gears Andrew Bevis said reliability and flexibility top the list.

“We don’t push pre‑built units into applications. We stock in component form so we can build the exact ratio, mounting and shaft arrangement a site needs,” he said.

That modular approach, supported by strong inventory, means faster, fit‑for‑purpose builds.

Wingfield combines 6,500 m² of workshop space, extensive parts inventory and a 1 MW load‑testing station for industrial gearboxes.

The team repairs, rebuilds and acceptance‑tests not only SEW units but other makes as well – validating performance under load before equipment returns to service.

“You don’t always need 100 per cent load to catch problems,” Bevis said. “Partial‑load tests will surface defects early.” The site is part of a national network with 500 kW rigs in Mackay and Newcastle, adding capacity when timelines are tight.

For grain operators moving off older worm gear drives, SEW-EURODRIVE supplies drop‑in bevel‑helical replacements.

A transition base matches the original footprint, so maintenance teams can swap units with minimal site modification – improving efficiency and reliability while cutting change‑out time.

“Because we build from components, we can standardise specs across sites and still hit exact ratios,” Bevis said.

When minutes matter, SEW’s component stock model and rostered 24-hour breakdown service help contain downtime.

“If something fails at 2am Sunday, call the 1300 number. We’ll move – if it’s needed, we’ll come in, build the gearbox and get it out that day,” Bevis said.

Dealing directly with the manufacturer shortens loops and speeds decisions, giving bulk handling operators a partner they can count on from design through after sales support.
