Thiess wins 5-year deal at Mt Arthur

Thiess has announced a $1.2 billion deal to provide mining services at BHP’s Mt Arthur Coal operation in the New South Wales Hunter Valley.

Under the five-year contract Thiess will perform mine design, planning and scheduling services, drill and blast operations, overburden removal and coal mining.

It also expands the scope of Thiess’ operation at Mt Arthur to the southern end of the operation, the Ayredale and Roxburgh pits.

Michael Wright, chief executive of Thiess parent company CIMIC Group, said the deal was the third successive contract Thiess had secured at Mt Arthur.

“It recognises our team’s specialist mining capability within the Hunter Valley’s complex geology and our team’s ability to work flexibly with our client,” Wright said.

The contract provides for up to 300 permanent roles at the operation.

Thiess managing director Douglas Thompson said the company looked forward to continuing successful operations at Mt Arthur.

“We have a proud history in the region and working with BHP,” Thompson said.

“We’re pleased to continue our work at Mt Arthur Coal’s southern operations and support local jobs, suppliers and businesses.”
