Growers in Victoria’s Wimmera Mallee region will benefit from almost $10 million in announced funding for road upgrades, targeted at boosting the efficiency of the state’s agriculture sector.

State agriculture minister Jaala Pulford on July 6 announced 17 road and bridge upgrades around the region had been selected as part of round two of the government’s Local Roads to Market program.

The two largest parcels of funding will go to Yarriambiack Shire. $5.54 million will widen a 1.5-kilometre section of the Minyip-Banyea Road, while $1.3 million will go towards sealing and widening other roads that service Yarriambiack’s large grain community.

$1.2 million will improve Yeungroon Road and Birchip-Corack Road in Buloke Shire, targeted at improving access for B-Doubles to grain storage facilities and transportation hubs like the Port of Geelong.

“The Local Roads to Market program is supporting farming communities throughout the Wimmera Mallee, ensuring their top-quality grain, livestock and vegetable produce makes it to market as quickly and safely as possible,” Pulford said.

“These important road and bridge upgrades will improve the competitiveness of agribusinesses across the Wimmera Mallee and improve the safety of country roads for all users.”
